•Movie Night in the park... Windsong Style.

Tonight about 100 people came out to watch Despicable Me 2.

It was really an enjoyable evening. The temps couldn't have been better and it was great to see friends with their families, enjoying the park. Other than the lack of a true parking lot, and only having portable toilets, Windsong Park is almost better suited for the movie in the park than Marna O'Brien is.

A look from the the screen about half an hour before showtime.

When I was a kid "movies in the park" were at the Drive-In and we used to go at least twice a month back then. Being from Riverside, we had the Van Buren and the Magnolia Drive-Ins to choose from, though we occasionally ventured over to the Rubidoux Drive-In too.

I still remember being under ten and running around the playground near the screen. Well, there are no Drive-Ins anymore, so the movie in the park is a great modern substitute. I'm sure that many kids that came tonight will remember it well into their adulthood.

There are two more movie in the park nights scheduled for this Summer.

August 8th and August 23rd. On August 8th the movie is in conjunction with "Camp Out at the Park" and on August 23rd there will be a movie after the ribbon cutting of the Freedom Swing. (If you don't know what that is, please follow this link to read about it)

If you have kids or not, plan on coming out and being part of the community. See you there.

As the movie is about to begin.

  1. Its funny you should mention children playing in the playground during the movie night at the drive-in. With the current selection of movies pandering to the children on would think the powers that be would come up with a playground for adults (chess boards, cribbage tables, domino's. It's that or maybe a better selection of movies with some geared towards teens, young adults, married couples with the kids occupied elsewhere in the park, even seniors have their old favorites. Oops, Slap me for making suggestions that belong to a parks commission or members of the community rather than two old biddies trying to garner votes.

    1. Kenny,
I'm not sure what that last part meant, but you make great points about having things in the parks for more than just children. Also, I don't get the hold up in forming a parks committee. Get the group together and let them start working. I haven't even heard of applications being taken yet.

    2. I go to marna several times a week. There are lots of folks of different ages using the parks. I think some tables for playing chess would be nice. I also think a shade cover on the playground would be nice. The fact that we don't have those things yet does not make away from the value of what we do have. So far I have yet to read one positive thing from you about anything and I can only speak for myself but that makes it appear that you are just looking for things to complain about rather than wanting to honestly discuss ideas or issues. I too want to see a parks commission but I wonder if you won't just complain about them as you do everything else? Because even with a parks commission there will be a need to prioritize what gets done first and inevitably someone's favorite project won't be chosen. Sheila

    3. The two old biddies comment was rude and did nothing but undermine your credibility. You may not like what those women are doing but many of us appreciate their efforts and willingness to get out there and try to make things happen. Even if I don't always agree with them they show more courage and fortitude than someone whose thinks activism consists of just pointing out what others are doing wrong but is unwilling to get involved beyond that. 2. Kenney you have some very good ideas. I'm a Boy Scout leader for one of the local troops here in Wildomar and whenever a parent comes to us with a great idea we ask if they would be able to help us out and lead it for us since most of us leaders are busy with our jobs and scout leader responsilities. Some of the best events we've had are the ones that the parents have helped us out with. I hope you can make these great ideas happen.

Unfortunately when dealing with a city facility life is not so simple a just asking. Until the City Council completes the task of setting up a Parks Commission/Committee where ideas can be openly discussed in a workshop format with the back and forth exchange of ideas, the citizens a stuck with a "Standing Committee on Parks" that doesn't feel they need to have regular posted meetings with agenda's and minutes. The other alternative for ideas to be brought forth is a 3 minute diatribe at a city council meeting which offers no opportunity for discussion.

    2. Hmmm I know of a citizen who simply asked for karaoke and a hula hoop contest before the movies in the park and she had no problems with that happening. I'd gladly put you in touch with her if you would like.

I'm not surprised you don't get it. With 33,000 citizens in Wildomar, do "Movies in the Park" really fit when only possibly 100 people show up (Karaoke before the movie, less than 1/2 hour it was over and done with). For what it cost to put on this event it would have been easier and cheaper to give them a matinee pass at a local theater. Wildomar is going to do a camp out in the park in August, the National Great American Backyard Camp Out day was June 28, guess it didn't fit Wildomar's schedule and will a sufficient number of people really care enough to show up. It's all fine and good to do what everyone else is doing at their parks but what will really work at Wildomar's parks, this town doesn't the foggiest idea because they refuse to ask.

  3. It seems that no matter what, ken wants to complain and not be part of the process. Unlike another person who saw a need for a freedom swing and has done a lot of work to make it happen. Because he likes something then the city should do it? And because he doesn't like an activity the city shouldn't do it? That is rather narrow minded. I find those with the city very open to ideas, but like Stewart says you may need to help out to make them happen. Or do you expect the city to just do want you want? I have no desire to watch a movie in the park but I know a couple of hundred people that wanted to and they have had a great time. A community is about making memories and offering different choices for people. Being an armchair critic is easy, getting out there and getting involved is hard work. I applaud all who work on these events. Whether I attend them or not. Sheila
