Improvements to Lost Road will cause some temporary road closures throughout the rest of the month.

When done, it will have a black top finish though it will not have a solid road bed under it. Usually the road needs maintenance yearly and with this method a full three years is anticipated between fixes.

I was going under 15 MPH when this truck flew past me doing at least triple what I was doing.

I've lived in Wildomar since 2001 and have never driven on Lost Rd. It's on the other side of the freeway from where I live and it's not a path to anywhere I've ever needed to go. So I decided to take a drive on it before it got paved.

Talk about a rough road. I never could get above 20 MPH in my Honda CRV and many times was reduced to under 10 MPH. I'm sure it'll be a night and day difference once the project is finished, but I'm not sure that won't just make the road all the more dangerous.

"How's that?" you ask.

It was just one blind corner after another and once the road is smooth enough to travel at 60+ MPH it won't take long before two Dale Earnhardt Jr wannabees meet up with each other. 

I made a video of my trip on Lost Road. It took more than four and a half minutes to make the 2 mile drive so I sped it up by 6 times, simulating about 75 MPH. You'll notice in the video that the last half mile of the road (on the Lake Elsinore side) had already been treated.

• Movie Night at the Park: Back to the Future

Marna O'Brien was the site for Back to the Future movie night at the park. Despite scorching daytime temps, my car said 110 in the shade, a good sized crowd turned out to watch the classic movie as it turned 30 years old.

Team Time Car, with "Doc" Nigh and his replica Delorean time machine, hosted a Q&A before the movie. Some of the trivia questions were definitely for the hardcore fans as they did go way off the beaten path.

The snack bar was being run by the Wildomar Historical Society.

Kristan Lloyd and her family prepared stuffed baked potatoes with the proceeds going towards the Brown House project. Three styles were offered: meatballs with marinara sauce; meatballs with gravy; and a vegetarian dish with broccoli and cheese.

Not your typical park food, but so good to eat.

The next Movie in the Park will be Saturday August 29th and the movie will be The Croods. The listed start time is "approximately 8:15PM" (but come earlier than that), the snack bar will be operated by Venture Crew 332 and there will be a chance to purchase and paint a tile that will go on the back wall of the snack bar starting at 5:00PM.

• Animal Friends of the Valleys: Clear the Shelters

What is Clear the Shelters?

Aug. 15, hundreds of shelters across the country are taking part in a nationwide push to find homes for pets in need. Many organizations have agreed to cut the cost of adoption for the one-day event, organized in partnership with NBC Owned Television Stations and Telemundo Stations Group.

I dropped by AFV around 4:00PM, while my car still was registering 110 degrees as the ambient temp, to see the place filled with people. Nearly every parking spot was taken, and once inside I saw people were in every quadrant of the shelter looking at animals. 

A look at the lobby, which is showing only about half of those that were in that part of the building at the moment.

Though they were slammed, the staff was nice enough to help me out with the stats they had gathered as of my visit. 

66 animals had been adopted, whereas a typical Saturday might have 30. 

I asked if it was busier than usual and they gave me that look... you know the look... the look that says "you can't be serious... right?" ☺

The official numbers won't be ready until Monday, but 66 adoptions, while there were plenty more in progress, is a good sign for many fury creatures.

• City Council Meeting August 2015

It was a fairly short meeting with only one real agenda item (3.1).

Going down the agenda we start with notes from the closed session.

This is where we get updates from the city attorney about pending cases against the city.

Item A was dealing with a case that will be settled with the city's insurance carrier (PARSAC) paying $27,500 and the case will be dismissed. The issue was dealing with a car accident (those were all the details I could get.)

Item B was a case challenging the city's adoption of the General Plan. A few months ago the trial judge ruled in favor of the city, but heaven forbid the knotheads behind this suit think that the ruling of some pedestrian trial judge be good enough for them, so they appealed and the city council unanimously voted to defend the appeal.

Public Comments (on non agenda items)

• Sheila Urlaub was discussing Lost Road.
• Kenny Mayes spoke on a several things including the city website.
• Joseph Morabito suggested a second clock should be added to the council chambers.

3.1 Community Meeting Room and Rental Policy

This passed 5-0 and here is the takeaway from it.

The room is can be rented for $8 an hour. That is with a $100 deposit and a $30 processing fee.

To prevent people from trying to open up a business at city hall, you can only rent the room once a month... though there is an exception if you are a non-profit organization.

Wednesdays and Sundays the room isn't available.

I asked for some clarification about what the $30 processing fee was for. It covers the paperwork and confirming insurance coverage. It is only charged once per year per group.

I then asked if there was a small group, that isn't organized yet, that wanted to rent the room, but didn't have insurance, if there was a provision for them. The answer is yes, and you can get insurance through the city... though that sounded like an ordeal in itself to me.

New Businesses Coming to Wildomar

Two eateries and a Pet Spa coming soon.
Yellow Basket has had a sign up for quite sometime on the empty pad in front of Barons, but they have finally broken ground and the foundation is about to be poured. I asked one of the workers if they had an end date in mind and the estimate was about 2 and a half months, or sometime in October they should be opening.

I've seen the Yellow Basket in Temecula for years, but have never eaten there. I went over to their website and took a look at the menu.

They have a pretty extensive breakfast menu; a basic "Mexican food" menu; a complete hamburger-hot dog menu; a dinner menu that includes NY Steak, Fish, Pork Chops, Fried Chicken and more; and a dessert line-up too. They didn't post prices so I have no idea if they are reasonably priced or not.

Also opening soon is Natalie's Rascals. There is an official Grand Opening ribbon cutting coming Saturday, August 22nd. It is next door to Baron's to the east (the left side if you're looking at Barons).

I also noticed that there will be a new eating house in the same plaza. It's called China One and it's going into the old Poblano's slot next to Stadium Pizza. I didn't see any proposed dates of opening posted.

I wonder what will be on the menu here.

The scuttlebutt is that a Steak 'n Shake was angling to go into the vacant KFC building but lease details couldn't be agreed upon.

Now that Sycamore Academy has moved out of Renaissance Plaza (they're moving into their new campus on Palomar this school year) that is opening up a ton of opportunities for even more new business to open here. The old gates are down and they are getting the former school rooms prepped for new occupants. Can't wait to see what comes next.

• Cottage Food Operation: Papa Sanchez's Churros

Have you ever heard of a CFO?

No, I'm not talking about a Chief Financial Officer, I talking about a Cottage Food Operation. 

Back in September of 2012 Governor Brown signed AB 1616 into law that took effect January 1, 2013.

In a nutshell, it allows certain types of foods to be made at home, and then sold to the public, with far less regulation, as long as you don't have more than $50,000 in gross annual sales.

I could copy and paste from other articles or rephrase what is already written but if you're interested in what the Cottage Food Laws are about, here are a few links.

All cottage food operators will have to meet specified requirements pursuant to the California Health and Safety Code related to preparing foods that are on the approved food list, completing a food processor training course within three months of registering, implementing sanitary operations, establishing state and federal compliant labels, and operating within established gross annual sales limits.  

As of the writing of this blog, there are four Cottage Food Operations that are registered with the county in Wildomar.

• Papa Sanchez's Churros
• Flour House Bakery
• Sweet Revenge Cakery
• Krafted

The first three are Class A CFOs and Krafted is Class B. The difference between Class and A and B is based on who you sell to. Class A can only sell their food directly, whereas Class B can wholesale them to a store.

With that brief introduction to CFOs out of the way, let me now tell you about Papa Sanchez's Churros. 

A couple of weeks back Kenny Mayes was telling me about them, so the next week my wife Grace and I stopped by for a taste. I don't know if I've ever had such fresh of churros before, they were warm and tasty. They had an airiness about them that other churros don't have. Others that I've had are a heavier, more doughnut like texture. These just seemed to melt in your mouth. The prices were pretty good too.

It is run by a local family that is headed by Joel and Yesenia Sanchez and I asked if there was a story to Papa Sanchez's Churrros.

My name is Yesenia Sanchez and we have papa Sanchez Churros. It's a family recipe since 1957, and we've really enjoyed this recipe and were excited to offer it to the public. We've (Joel and Yesenia) been married for 26 years and we've been trying to make the churros [and offer them for sale] here, but it wasn't approved by the city. We were surprised to see churros on the list [of approved cottage foods] and when the cottage food permit came through, I was so excited. 

As of this blog they are opened on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays from 4pm-9pm, but no FaceBook page or other internet site yet. Their address is 22081 Walnut Dr.

Don't be shy, drive on over this weekend and give them a try. It's a throwback to yesteryear when such home businesses were more commonplace. Also, now you have the added assurance that they've gone out of their way to comply with the state and county regulations. Let's hope to see them selling their churros at future city events. ☺

• Wildomar Night At The Diamond 2015

 As part of Wildomar Night, a local charity receives a portion of the proceeds. Wildomar's VFW was this year's choice.

Tickets were sold by the Chamber of Commerce and we all sat in section 103. If you're good at "Where's Waldo" you'll be able to pick out many faces that you recognize in the picture below.
